Malaysia: Paradise in the Jungle

Tioman Island, located off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is a true hidden gem of the tropical world. Tim Roxborogh’s experience highlights both the wild beauty and quirky challenges of this paradise, which was once named among the "10 Most Beautiful Islands in the World" by Time magazine in the 1970s. Even after decades, the island’s natural allure still stands strong.

A Jungle Trek That Goes Banana-less

Roxborogh’s jungle adventure on Tioman Island began with a grueling 10 km trek through the dense tropical jungle, accompanied by two Belgian travelers he met on the beach the night before. Though the scenery was stunning, he found himself hit with painful muscle cramps due to dehydration and a lack of bananas—essential for rehydration in the humid jungle heat. While cramps are often a source of amusement to fellow travelers, the struggle to continue the journey was real.

Tioman’s Beauty Still Shines

Despite some questionable development decisions, such as an underwhelming marina in Tekek, the island retains its charm. Tioman remains mostly untouched by modern development, offering visitors unspoiled beaches, vibrant sea life, and crystal-clear waters. These natural wonders are what still make Tioman a must-visit, even after all these years.

Monkey Business and the Quest for Bananas

One of the most memorable moments of Roxborogh’s trip was his encounter with a family of mischievous monkeys. While exploring a dirt path to a turtle sanctuary, he met two fellow travelers from New Zealand. They swapped their large stick for his bananas, which had attracted the curious monkeys. When Roxborogh approached the monkeys, one of them hissed, and he had to flee, frantically waving his stick and using a towel as protection. This humorous interaction serves as a reminder that Tioman’s wildlife can be as unpredictable as it is entertaining.

Relaxing on Tioman’s Beaches

After a brief encounter with heat stroke, Roxborogh’s recovery involved a much-needed visit to one of Tioman’s pristine, white-sand beaches. The tranquility of the island, its crystal-clear seas, and the solitude found on secluded beaches are what truly make Tioman special. He snorkeled in the beautiful waters, reminding himself why he loved the island so much.

Tioman: A Small Island with Endless Adventures

At just 136 square kilometers, Tioman is big enough to explore but small enough not to feel overwhelming. New beaches, coral reefs, and jungle paths are always waiting to be discovered. Yet, as Roxborogh humorously learned, it’s always wise to keep an eye out for both the wildlife (especially the monkeys) and the bananas!
